M2TS and MKV at a glance
M2TS
M2TS is the video format of Blu-ray discs and many AVCHD camcorders. Computers play it with the right app, but phones and websites usually need MP4.
MKV
MKV is an open video format that can store several audio and subtitle tracks in one file. It is common for movie and TV rips but has weak support on Apple devices.
Questions
About converting M2TS to MKV.
Does converting M2TS to MKV reduce the quality?
With the default settings most videos keep their original quality. If you change any video setting or set a start or end time, the video is converted with those settings and the picture can change slightly.
My M2TS file has several audio tracks. Which one do I get?
All of them. The MKV file keeps every audio track with its language, and the track marked as default stays the default. Tracks that contain no sound are left out.
Are subtitles kept when I convert M2TS to MKV?
Text subtitles and picture-based subtitles (for example from a DVD or Blu-ray) are kept with their language. Fonts used by styled subtitles stay in the file as well. Teletext and closed caption tracks are left out, as are rare formats MKV cannot store.
Will the MKV file have a watermark?
No. Converted files never get a watermark, free conversions included.
Where are my files stored?
On servers in the EU, and only for 24 hours. After that they are deleted automatically.
