GZ and ZIP at a glance
GZ
A GZ file is a single file compressed with gzip, for example a log file or a database dump. It holds one file only, so folders are usually packed as TAR.GZ.
ZIP
ZIP packs files and folders into one compressed file. It is the archive format that every computer and phone opens without extra software.
Questions
About converting GZ to ZIP.
What will the ZIP contain?
One file: the content of your GZ, named like your file without the .gz ending. If the GZ holds a TAR archive, the ZIP contains all files from that archive instead.
How large can the archive be?
Unpacked, the content can be up to 4 GB in at most 20,000 files. Large archives that would unpack to more than 250 times their own size are stopped for safety.
Can I open the ZIP on Windows and Mac?
Yes. Windows File Explorer and macOS Finder open ZIP files without extra software, and so does the Files app on iPhone.
Do I need an account?
No. Up to 50 files a day work without an account, and the results have no watermark.
What happens to my files after the conversion?
Your files are processed on servers in the EU and deleted automatically after 24 hours.
