MKV and MP3 at a glance
MKV
MKV is an open video format that can store several audio and subtitle tracks in one file. It is common for movie and TV rips but has weak support on Apple devices.
MP3
MP3 is the most compatible audio format and plays on practically every device. It keeps files small by removing sounds that are hard to hear.
Questions
About converting MKV to MP3.
What ends up in the MP3 file?
Only the sound. The picture is dropped. If your MKV has several audio tracks, you get the one marked as default, or the first one if none is marked.
What quality does the MP3 have?
By default the MP3 uses a variable bitrate at high quality, which averages around 190 kbit/s for music. You can also choose a fixed bitrate between 96 and 320 kbit/s. If your MKV already contains MP3 audio, the default settings do not lower its sound quality.
What happens to surround sound in my MKV?
MP3 holds at most two channels, so surround audio is mixed down to stereo.
Will the MP3 file have a watermark?
No. Converted files never get a watermark, free conversions included.
What happens to my files after the conversion?
Your files are processed on servers in the EU and deleted automatically after 24 hours.
