WAV and MP3 at a glance
WAV
WAV stores audio uncompressed, so it keeps full quality but takes a lot of space. It is the standard format for audio editing and for many professional tools.
MP3
MP3 is the most compatible audio format and plays on practically every device. It keeps files small by removing sounds that are hard to hear.
Questions
About converting WAV to MP3.
How much smaller will the MP3 be?
A CD quality WAV uses about 1,411 kbit/s, an MP3 at 320 kbit/s less than a quarter of that. At 128 kbit/s the file is about 90 percent smaller.
What quality does the MP3 have?
By default the MP3 uses a variable bitrate at high quality, which averages around 190 kbit/s for music. You can also choose a fixed bitrate between 96 and 320 kbit/s.
What happens to surround sound in my WAV?
MP3 holds at most two channels, so surround audio is mixed down to stereo.
Do I need an account?
No. Up to 50 files a day work without an account, and the results have no watermark.
Where are my files stored?
On servers in the EU, and only for 24 hours. After that they are deleted automatically.
